Position Summary:

To provide outpatient counseling services to the Adolescent and Young Adult population under direct supervision as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team caring for persons with substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring mental health disorders (COD), as well as their families and significant others when indicated. This includes participation in the intake process as well as individual, group and multi-family group therapy as needed. The Family Specialist may have direct supervisory or mentoring responsibilities for clinicians and Marriage and Family Program Interns. Reports to the assigned clinic's Clinical Coordinator. The therapist will work closely with the family specialist team.


Direct Clinical:

Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team involving intake evaluation treatment. Coordinates care management services for patients particularly with the various Addiction Psychiatry Program (APP), ambulatory programs, CPEP, PHP and the 3.9000 inpatient unit. Evaluates drug and alcohol usage and determines level of care needed.

Completes evaluations on significant other and or family members to determine placement in family program.

Provides direct family therapy to patients, family members and significant others.

Provides direct clinical services to assigned patients for extended dispositional evaluation, which may include taking a primary therapist and/or case management role; i.e., group and 1:1 therapy in the form of intensive groups or aftercare groups.

Documents evaluation, disposition, and as needed treatment in the patient's chart in compliance with APP, Department, Hospital, and NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) policy, CPS, Justice Center, Education/Vocation programs, partner with local school systems.

May give lectures/talks on specific topics to patients and their families.

Family specialist will collaborate and connect with the community and be mobile throughout their work week as indicated/needed.

Indirect Clinical:

Ensures that Hospital, Department and Chemical Dependence Counseling policies and procedures are implemented with regard to professional practice, patient care, and disposition training.

Provides supervision to interns and consultation to staff as assigned.

Receive individual and group supervision as assigned by the Clinical Coordinator.

Attends CDC Discipline and Program staff meetings.

Participates in the routine committee processes and complies with departmental quality assurance and staff development activities.

Will maintain well documented charts, meet regulatory requirements and timeframes as well as hospital wide documentation policies. The clinician will satisfy all yearly hospital based requirements.


Master's Degree in a discipline related to the human service field is required, or Master’s Degree in Marriage & Family Therapy is preferred. 1-3 years of related experience in substance use disorder treatment specifically with adolescent/young adult population required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. NYS certification as Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) required.
