Position Summary:

The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) of the University of Rochester is a unique national resource for research and education in science and technology focusing on using lasers to initiate fusion and high energy density physics. LLE is currently seeking an experienced senior laboratory engineer in the Electronics and Controls Engineering group.

The successful candidate will take an active role supervising and building custom control systems, and be capable of interacting with a team of scientists, instrument specialists, mechanical, optical, and software engineers to develop and support custom control system solutions for cutting edge research. Additionally, the candidate will write requirements, present project reviews, and take a hands-on role in the deployment and support of these systems. Candidate should have a BS and 5 years of relevant experience or equivalent.

Requirements include the ability to demonstrate a theoretical and hands-on knowledge of the following:

  • Design, assembly, documentation, testing and troubleshooting custom control systems

  • PLC programming utilizing ladder logic or embedded controller procedural programming

  • Fail-safe methods employed in system design

  • CAD schematic capture

  • High level troubleshooting skills

  • Strong documentation skills

  • Data acquisition and electrical measurement techniques

  • Project budgeting and time management

  • Provide regular progress reports to upper management

  • Perform annual performance reviews for direct reports

Desired skills or experience includes:

  • Experience with cryogenic and/or vacuum systems

  • LabVIEW or other computer programming experience

  • Familiarity with EMI/EMC techniques

  • Mechanical aptitude

  • Attention to detail

  • Curiosity and a desire to learn new concepts, skills, and techniques
