Responsibilities
Position Summary:
Provides various patient care duties for cognitively impaired, brain injured rehabilitation patients in accordance with department policies and objectives under the direction/supervision of registered nurse. Assists and directs patient in activities that support the rehabilitation plan, maximizes patient and staff safety and documents in Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
Main responsibilities:
Provide a safe environment for patients through continual observation
Demonstrates problem solving and critical thinking skills while helping to implement therapeutic/diversional interventions
Identifying potential risks and early signs of escalating patient behaviors (agitation, confusion, anxiety)
Facilitation of therapeutic and diversional activities to maintain patient safety, refocus, redirect and promote healthy adaptive behaviors by the patient
With consultation/direction from registered nurse revises and modifies care plan in response to changes in patient need and alterations in therapeutic/diversional approach
Duties may also include:
Assisting patient with ambulation, personal hygiene, bathing, dressing, and other activities of daily living
Participation in care plan meetings and patient progress reports
Collecting and recording vital signs, BP, Temp, HR, RR
Lifting, turning, positioning and transferring patients (utilizing mechanical devices if necessary)
Consistent with provider orders/care plan and with direction from registered nurses utilize restraints, restraint alternatives, applying, removing protective devices (helmets, braces, etc.)
Distributing water, nourishment, meal trays, and assisting patients to eat and drink as needed
Emptying, measuring and recording intake and output excluding IV intake
Transport patients to and from therapy
Collaborates with patients, family members and the interdisciplinary team by receiving end of shift report, participating in team meetings and communicating pertinent information appropriately
Accompany patient to therapy for participation support
Performs other duties as assigned by Registered Nurse.

8 and 12 hour shifts available with rotating holiday assignments per unit policy
Qualification:
AAS degree in a Psychology or Sociology field, and 2-3 years recent Psychiatric Technician experience or Bachelor’s degree in related field, or minimum two years’ of RN Nursing School; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s in Human Services preferred.
