The senior social worker for the Child and Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Service (CAPHS) has administrative, supervisory and clinical responsibility. He/she functions clinically as a social work therapist providing direct services to patients and their families in the CAPHS. Clinical duties include psychosocial assessment, psychiatric evaluation, family assessment, crisis intervention, individual, group, and family therapy, treatment planning, and case coordination. The senior social worker is responsible for the supervision, coordination, and delivery of social work services in the CAPHS.The senior social worker also covers for the Program Director. In this role he/she oversees the operational functioning of the 12 patient CAPHS. He/she collaborates with the Program Director and Medical Director of the Service to monitor quality and quantity of services provided, and to develop, manage, and evaluate programs.



  • As a member of the interdisciplinary leadership team for the CAPHS, collaborates to develop and implement policies, procedures, and programs.

  • Participates in the development and/or execution of quality improvement and outcome measurement initiatives in the service area.

  • Provides administrative oversight and systems management to ensure interdisciplinary staff meet access, documentation, and internal/external communication standards, as well as financial accountabilities.

  • In collaboration with Program Director, provides cost-effective management of financial resources to meet clinical demand needs.

  • Ensures the provision of positive clinical outcomes, consumer and famil satisfaction and seamless transition of patients to the next level of care.

  • Collaborates with discipline supervisors to ensure supervision and professional development of staff.

  • Ensures that Social Work Division, Department, and Hospital policies and procedures are implemented with regard to patient care, discharge planning, and professional practice.

  • Provides administrative oversight, supervision, case and crisis management consultation to interdisciplinary staff in CAPHS, including leading weekly interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, and authorizing ED evaluations and restraints.

  • Develops and maintain linkages with community agencies/services integral to continuity of care for children and adolescents within the

  • Participates in routine committee process of the Social Work Division and the CAPHS, and complies with Social Work Division and Departmental quality improvement and staff development activities.

  • Participates in activities of the Social Work Division including, but not limited to, timely completion of statistical reports/forms, time sheets and other Hospital or Division forms; Hospital and Division mandatory inservice training programs and annual health updates.

  • Attends Social Work Division and/or Administrative meetings as required.

  • Subscribes to the Departmental goal of creating a culturally competent environment by treating patient, families, trainees, and co-workers in a sensitive manner with appropriate attention to cultural differences.

  • Participates in available cultural competence events and training appropriate to job duties.


  • Functions as a primary therapist to patients in the Child and Adolescent Partial Hospital Program assigned to his/her caseload.

  • Provides a comprehensive assessment of assigned patients and their families.

  • Provides social work treatment, education and support to patients and families, using individual, family and/or group modalities.

  • Develops a comprehensive treatment plan, and coordinates the delivery of services to his/her patients in coordination with other members of the interdisciplinary team.

  • Participates in the development, implementation, leadership, and supervision of groups within the CAPHS.

  • Collaborates with appropriate collateral contacts and maintains linkages to community resources.

  • Coordinates activities related to comprehensive discharge planning for patients on his/her caseload, and mobilizes family and community resources to support the patients' successful functioning after discharge from the program.

  • Consults to other members of the treatment team on the identification, assessment, and reporting of child abuse and neglect or domestic violence.

  • Documents all patient care activities and interventions in the patient's chart in compliance with Division, Department and Hospital policy.

  • Participates in on-call activities of the Social Work Division, including after hours on-call.

  • Ensures back-up social work services during the absence of coworkers in theCAPHS.

    Teaching (TBD)

  • The senior social worker provides education or supervision to interdisciplinary trainees as requested.

  • The senior social worker may function as a fieldwork instructor for graduate and undergraduate social work students.

    Research (TBD)

  • The senior social worker may participate in the development and/or implementation of social work or interdisciplinary research endeavors as appropriate.



  • The senior social worker's professional performance is supervised by a Social Work Division supervisor who is licensed by the State of New York (LMSW).


  • The senior social worker is accountable administratively and clinically to his/her social work supervisor and through him/her to the Social Work Division Administration for provision of social work services, and adherence to Social Work policies, procedures, and standards of professional conduct. The social worker's job performance must conform to the expectations set forth in the position description. The senior social worker is accountable to the Program Director for providing professional social work services in accordance with the standards established by the Department of Psychiatry, the Social Work Division, and Strong Memorial Hospital.


  • Social work evaluations are conducted annually by the social worker's supervisor, with commentary from the service area Directors. Salary and promotional recommendations are made by the social work supervisor in consultation with appropriate Social Worker Division personnel. Salary increases and promotional recommendations are subject to guidelines established by the Social Work Division, Strong Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester.


    The social worker who occupies this position must have an MSW from an accredited social work graduate program. He/she must be licensed by the State of New York and have at least three years of relevant experience. He/she preferably either possesses or will apply for an "R" number, as soon as the requirements are met.


    This position description is reviewed annually by the social worker and his/her supervisor. Position review provides opportunity for comment from the Program Director (s), and for updating, as needed. Similarly, if a new social worker is hired for the position, a review and update of the position description should occur. Changes in the position description are recommended by the supervisor, in consultation with the Program Director. Any position modification is authorized by the Social Work Division Clinical Manager for Psychiatry.
