Responsibilities

The Laboratory for Laser Energetics has an opening for an experienced mechanical, electrical, and/or vacuum systems technician within the laboratory's Cryogenic and Tritium Facility. The position entails the operation and maintenance of complex mechanical systems used to characterize, manipulate, transport and position cryogenic fuel pellets for LLE's Inertial Confinement Fusion research program. Typical hours are 8:30 to 5:30pm but must be able to accommodate early morning or evening hours with sufficient notice.

Candidates are sought to operate and maintain state-of-the-art laser systems and associated diagnostics.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct support of operational shift
  • Protect integration support
  • Preventative maintenance actions
  • Procedural calibration of instrumentation
  • System reconfiguration in a dynamic team environment

Qualifications:

Master's degree with major course work in the field of assignment. With a Master's Degree, a minimum 3 years of professional experience in the field of assignment. With the equivalent of a Master's Degree in experience, training and education, 5 years in the field of assignment with some independent research experience; or an equivalent combination of experience, training and education.

A degree in the areas of automotive, mechanical, electrical, or chemical technology is desired but not required. Experience with vacuum systems, radiological materials, and/or engineering testing is a plus. This job requires strong mechanical aptitude, physical strength, a good understanding of basic physics, familiarity with Microsoft Office, and a willingness to work diligently in an atmosphere with high expectations for productivity. Softer required skills include attention to detail, curiosity, good record keeping, and the ability to work together as a team.

Degree in optics, electronics, or a related field desired, as are excellent computer and documentation skills. Must be able to work the second shift.
