General Purpose:

Manage and oversee the daily operation of Perioperative Supply Chain Department including managing and directing staff that are responsible for ordering, receiving and maintaining inventory of operating room supplies and implants. Using independent judgment, ensure inventory is managed in accordance with hospital policy and best practices. Recommend and implement with the Perioperative Supply Chain Manager, Value Analysis staff and Perioperative Nursing problem-solving initiatives. Under general direction of the Perioperative Supply Chain Manager, with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative, oversees the development, implementation, and maintenance of fiscal and operational improvements to ensure customer service, delivery standards, and expense mgt. goals for SMH OR are met.

Specific Responsibilities:

Manage the daily operation of the Perioperative Supply Chain program in obtaining supplies and implants for Strong Memorial Hospital OR and Anesthesia. Establish and manage communication standards with distributors, vendors, other sites, clinical offices, sterile processing and clinicians. Identify, implement and manage Supply Chain staff in the solutions for problems relating to the process and/or ordering system and interfaces between OR systems and the Material Management software while ensuring the integrity of the University Materials Management Item File. Monitor substitute items and ensure proper labeling of all items locations to avoid incorrect stocking and improve workflow. Communicate with Periop Supply Chain Manager and staff regarding items with unusual descriptions or manufacturer catalog numbers when they may conflict with information in the Item File.

Provide, review and analyze reports for decision making and strategic planning. Establish requirements for par forms, count sheets, staffing and process using industry best practices in inventory management. Assist in the development, interpretation, and administration of Perioperative Supply Chain policies. Communicate with Nursing, Anesthesia, clinicians, and SPD staff regarding ever-evolving/changing needs to ensure needs are addressed and met in a timely fashion.

Supervise Perioperative Supply Chain staff, in accordance with hospital and departmental policy: direct, evaluate, conduct disciplinary actions and hiring decisions for the ordering & receiving areas in SMH OR. Establish competencies and training of staff to ensure current and future Supply Chain, OR, Hospital and University objectives are met. Establish down cart sorting and stocking procedures. Optimize returned supply sorting and breakdown to ensure case carts are available for SPD staff to pick items for pending cases. Monitor accuracy of sorted down cart baskets to ensure Perioperative Supply Chain staff can stock products isolated to one area to allow for better workflow and better use of labor time. Monitor stock of all items at regular intervals to ensure close dated items are used first to prevent loss of product due to expiration, and limited risk of compromising patient care.

Under the direction of the Periop Supply Chain Manager, serve as the person responsible for carrying out the semi-annual physical product inventory for the OR as required by SMH Finance to meet cost accounting and regulatory requirements.

Work with leadership in Sterile Processing, Anesthesia, Perioperative Services and Corporate Purchasing to implement and direct Perioperative supply and implant requirements according to hospital policies and industry best standards. Create and direct the management of all Departmental Operations Manuals. Establish processes to improve revenue optimization and cost reduction activities.

Responsible for coordinating resolution of OR Product Recall Alerts and coordinating the containment, removal, and documentation of hazardous products from the OR inventory.


College Degree, 4 years of related experience or a combination of education and experienceComputer proficiency to include Microsoft Office software applications. ASC/PMM and PICIS/ORManager experience are desired.Experience with Lean principles, performance measurement, inventory management, system analytics, finance, and process improvement.Excellent oral and written communication skills. Supply Chain experience is preferred.Holiday and weekend shifts may be required based on the needs of the department.
