Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Provides direct research support at the professional entry level and supervisor support to other technicians, graduate and undergraduate students, rotating medical students and residents in performing research laboratory assignments, which are various and diversified in nature, and in accordance with standard practices and procedures, as well as performs assignments as needed.

Supervision and Direction Exercised:

Under general guidance and with latitude for exercising independent judgement, performs research related activities in scope and complexity related to research project.

Machines and Equipment Used:

Computers, motion platform, virtual reality equipment, flux gate magnetometer, video eye movement tracker, machine shop.

Typical Duties:

Experiments (20%)

  • Develops and modifies experimental testing methods including iterative testing and modification of protocols prior to implementation.

  • Oversees scheduling and coordination as well as conducts motion perceptual experiments involving human subjects with balance disorders as well as normal controls.

  • Facilitation of getting institutional review board (IRB) approval of new protocols and subject recruitment methods.

  • Recruits subjects for participation in studies as well as obtaining informed consent as needed.

    Data Analysis (30%)

  • Implements procedures for the collection, management, analysis, summarization and archive of data

  • Analyses and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within scope of the scientific study. Assesses the importance of scientific findings in relation to the overall research objectives of the project.

  • Responsible for creating and editing figures to be used in scientific papers published by the PI.

    Maintenance (10%)

  • Maintains quality controls associated with lab apparatus

  • Identifies needed lab supplies

  • Coordinates service support for maintenance of lab equipment

  • Monitors computer-based inventories and databases

    Supervision (40%)

  • Serves as laboratory manager by organizing all research activities in this lab to include the directing and gathering of research materials, supplies, equipment apparatus and experimental subjects

  • Comprehensive training of new lab technicians

  • Coordinates with lab technician at offsite location on progress of experiments

  • Supervisor of lab technicians and undergraduate students

  • Participates as part of the interview committee when interviewing new lab technicians or students

  • Serves as liaison and technical troubleshooter between research investigators as related to project.

  • Assists graduate and undergraduate students in the design of research projects and in the preparation of research proposals.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Candidate must be organized and familiar with HIPAA regulations. Must be certified to conduct human experiments or become certified from the University of Rochester Research Science Review Board (RSRB). Must exercise skill, judgment, and knowledge of or have the ability to quickly learn the principles and methods of a technical field. Excellent communication skills required. Attention to detail and meticulous ability to maintain records is essential. Should be familiar with Microsoft Office as well as MatLab. Engineering or technical background and programming experience in C++ and/or MatLab are highly desirable.

    Requirements:

    Bachelor’s degree with course work in field of assignment with 1 year or related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers; equivalent combination of education and experience.
