GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Surgical Support Operations Tech (SSOT) Supervisor oversees and directs the Surgical Support Operations Technician (SSOT) Team members. Responsibilities include but are not limited to overseeing the training and performance evaluations of team members, daily assignments and work schedules, communicating with charge and staff nursing regarding ongoing case scheduling and needs changes. The overall goal of the technical support team is to ensure all necessary equipment for surgical procedures is provided, in working order, ready to use, and to provide technical support to all staff and clinicians during surgical procedures as needed.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Oversee the execution of the daily OR schedule from the aspect of needed equipment, and directs SSOT team support of cases as required.

  2. Manages vacation, daily schedule, PTO, bereavement and call-ins.

  3. Manages SSOT team members assignments to tasks based on individual expertise levels and offer technical back-up as needed.

  4. Monitor ongoing changes in daily schedule and communicate equipment and staffing changes with SSOT team members, as well as offer assistance to Charge Nurse in executing changes in the schedule.

  5. Manages and monitors newer team members' skills building, offer precepting where needed, provide feedback to improve team members' learning opportunities. Track team members' progress on skills improvements.

  6. Leads maintenance of perioperative lead inventory to ensure cleanliness and integrity in accordance with NYS and DOH standards.

  7. Build and maintain good working relationships with Nursing staff and Attending Surgeons to better understand and serve their needs in providing care to patients.

  8. Work closely with Clinical Engineering to ensure all equipment utilized in the OR is in proper working order, has current inspections, and is removed from service for repair when warranted.

  9. Communicates with third party vendors to coordinate equipment maintenance and repair, as well as coordinating rental equipment.

  10. Coordinates equipment loaned to affiliate locations and ensures proper delivery and return to SMH.

  11. Responsible for building and developing the service line; manage long term goal expansion and service development. Develops and executes goals regarding strategic initiatives. Support Hospital goals including patient safety, OR access, reduced delays and prevention of patient harm.

  12. Participates in project planning meetings to coordinate construction, IT integration, installations, and implementation of medical equipment.

  13. Responds to device incident/event reports (RL Solutions) to address equipment malfunctions, often involved in correcting operator errors.

  14. Maintains our Medical Asset log in conjunction with perioperative administrator.

  15. Orders and maintains medical gases from Airgas.

  16. Coordinates equipment replacement and offers expertise to Capital Budget personnel regarding the replacement of older, outdated equipment as units approach end of service life. Assists in obtaining quotes from vendors for equipment replacements.

  17. Acts as the Department Laser Safety Officer to maintain compliance with UR safety policies. Oversees training of staff in becoming laser certified on individual laser systems.

  18. Maintains ability to perform all tasks as outlined under SSOT Job Description and performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to four years of SSOT experience required. Excel, Word, Outlook and supervisory experience preferred.
