The On-Call/TAR Sign Language interpreter provides interpreting services for all clinical and professional University of Rochester Medical Center staff, patients and family members/significant others who are with the patient. The On-Call/TAR interpreter will have the opportunity to work with Deaf Professionals at URMC and connect with a top-notch interpreter staff including Designated Interpreters and Certified Deaf Interpreters.

All On-Call staff must fulfill the minimum on-call requirements. Details regarding this obligation and all other scheduling information are available from the Lead or Manager.

When the minimum On-Call requirement is met, TAR hours (scheduled patient care work) may be taken as per hospital needs and at the discretion of the interpreter and scheduler/Lead. There is no requirement for the On-Call interpreter to work a minimum number of TAR hours.

If the work solely consists of working with Deaf Professionals, then there is no obligation to fulfill the On-call requirements.

Specific Responsibilities

Completes scheduled training and other required staff activities. 5%

  • Yearly mandatory online policy and procedure training

  • Yearly health updates

  • Attends staff meetings

  • Other training/activities as necessary

Completes all paperwork and administrative duties. 5%

  • eRecord completed at the end of each patient interaction

  • On-Call log

  • Monthly On-Call preference sheets

  • Yearly certification update

  • Professional development transcript

  • Other paperwork as necessary

Performs clinical duties. 90%

  • During On-Call shifts, interpreter carries a pager assigned by the hospital responding to all pages immediately.

  • Interpreter interprets all assignments, whether prescheduled or On-Call, in a timely and professional manner in accordance with hospital policy.

Supervision, Accountability, and Evaluation


  • The Sign Language interpreter is supervised by the Lead for Patient Care or Deaf Professional Interpreters in conjunction with the Manager of ASL Interpreter Services.


  • The Sign Language interpreter is accountable to his/her Lead and Manager of Interpreter Services for implementation of the job responsibilities set forth in this job description, adherence to Hospital and Social Work and Patient & Family Services policies, procedures and standards of interpreter conduct and adherence to the RID Code of Professional Conduct.

  • The Sign Language Interpreter arranges coverage and contacts supervisor via pager if commitment to scheduled work cannot be fulfilled.


  • An evaluation is conducted at the end of the first six months of employment, and annually thereafter by the Lead for Sign Language Patient Care, or Deaf Professional Interpreters, or Manager of ASL Interpreter Services.

Professional Qualifications

  • Two years of post-high school education or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Membership with The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and adherence to tenets within the RID Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct require

  • Minimum of two years general interpreting in a health care setting is required

  • Have at least passed the written tests for RID or BEI

  • RID Certification, Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) level 3, or similar National Certification preferred within 18 months of employment
