Position Summary:

Inspects, manages and sets priorities on all activities within assigned shop operations. Coordinates projects occurring within these facilities while maintaining communications with all clients. Supervises assigned trade personnel. Makes recommendations on hiring, performance assessment, staff development, disciplines & terminations. Assists in the development of capital renewal program. Exercises excellent customer service in a diverse environment. Rotating on-call responsibilities.


Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment:

  • Supervises assigned skilled trades personnel. Hires or makes recommendations for hiring, appraises performance, counsels, disciplines, makes recommendations on promotions and other personnel matters.

  • Inspects and supervises all activities within assigned operations. In conjunction with the Technical Trades Manager, coordinates projects occurring within these facilities while maintaining communications with all clients/users. Assures that all needs and expectations of customers are met and facility performance is maintained at acceptable standards.

  • Develops short and long-term work assignments, monitors and directs work performance within assigned area. Responsible for task assignment, coordination and guidance of all Facilities personnel working in the area. Enlists assistance of other trade shops or contractors when needed. Identifies and procures services of others to specify or perform contract work. Provides project quality control and inspection for capital renewal and replacement projects. Develops small projects occurring in the assigned facilities.

  • Supervises, assigns, and implements equipment preventive maintenance programs for assigned areas while providing record keeping for various maintenance and replacement priorities.

  • Develops and maintains a professional affiliation with all Facility customers. Establishes regular meetings and implements procedures to address concerns and problems. Provides resolution or appropriate feedback to concerned parties. Meets regularly with staff regarding policy or procedural changes being implemented. Develops and maintains a professional affiliation with other University Facilities Divisions. Assures operational objectives are consistent with University and Department Policies & Procedures.

  • Approves daily employee labor charges after validating work effort. Audits employee labor and material charges to verify appropriateness. If discrepancies are identified, follows up with staff to reconcile the records.

  • Continually surveys and inspects all areas within facilities for potential maintenance problems or deficiencies. Maintains records of deficiencies and implements corrective measures within budgetary limits where possible. Regularly inspects all assigned facility structures and equipment for the purpose of determining current conditions and repair priorities.

  • Manages expenses for budget compliance and implements cost reduction measures as necessary. This includes authorization and/or follow-up of material requisitions for the area. Inspects or otherwise verifies that all service requests and work performed within the area meets University standards. Determines and implements, with the Trade Manager’s authorization, the best methods for cost reduction and operational improvements.

  • Assists the Facilities Planning division with customers interested in renovations, improvements, and modifications. Coordinates with contractors and consultants to complete projects on time, within budget, and with minimal disruption to other building operations.

  • Documents conditions of a capital nature found to be sub-standard. Assists the Technical Trades Manager in the development and implementation of capital renewal and replacement programs.

  • Administers equipment repair, purchase and replacement programs. Maintains inventory of department equipment in their assigned areas.

  • Participates in on-call rotation. Provides extended coverage during special projects or shutdown periods.


A.A.S. Degree in a trade related discipline and 3-5 years supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
