Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The ETT technician works in conjunction with the RNs who supervise the treadmill tests, and performs various exercise protocols on patients with known or suspected heart disease, including VO2 max. testing now required for all heart transplant candidates. Requires superior knowledge of all aspects of Electrocardiography, arrhythmia, ischemic changes, etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparation of patient:

  • Explains purpose of test to patient.

  • Presents, explains and obtains signature on consent form. Obtains list of pertinent medications from patient.

  • Prepares patient skin, applies monitoring electrodes.

  • Performance of tests:

  • Treadmill - 25%

  • VO2 - 20%

  • TWA - 5%

  • Records preliminary ECG tracings in supine and standing position.

  • During active phase of the test, the tech is directly responsible for recording, observing and interpreting current ECG data, and relaying any abnormalities to the health care professional supervising the test.

  • Documents and records blood pressure and heart rate response, symptomatic episodes, and significant ECG changes throughout the test. Monitors patient during the recovery period.

  • Typing of Treadmill reports

  • Collects reports following over-reading and signature by Cardiologist.

  • Types final version of report into customized computer data base reporting system, generates and prints final reports.

  • Performs routine maintenance, daily calibrations, trouble shoots malfunctioning equipment, and checks operation of defibrillator each day.

  • Inventories and stocks all supplies for the exercise lab.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in science or related field, plus 3 years relevant work experience, or combination of education and experience. Technical experience in ECG in a Cardiology practice preferred. Strong computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office, e-mail and electronic medical records required.
