Position Summary

As part of a team of two Analyst/Programmers, this position will assist the Cancer Control Research Base Lead Analyst Programmer, under general supervision and with latitude for independent judgment and creativity, with projects regarding the design/maintenance of the Research Base website as well as other smaller websites/webpages for multicenter and local research studies, web-based applications used as portals to interface with 20+ affiliated sites nationwide. The individual will assist in the maintenance critical research base and study database systems as well as program data collection and quality assurance systems and procedures. Work responsibilities include: webmaster tasks, integration with database systems, coordinating with multiple investigators and research/data entry team members to optimize data collection and processing.

General Duties

Web design/management (35%)

  • Design, maintain and monitor websites used to interface between the Research Base and affiliates. Recommend and implement changes and new features. Maintain and monitor Electronic Query System used to track and insure timely data submissions.

  • Manage, maintain and update a research participant registration system that interfaces with NCI’s OPEN system (using and/or Java, SQL Server Database)

  • Troubleshoot secure web-based applications used by nationwide affiliates to register subjects on multiple studies.

Data collection systems (Scripting/API/Troubleshooting) (35%)

  • Assist IT team with data collection systems for multicenter and local clinical trials. Work closely with Lead Analyst/Programmer and the other Analyst Programmer, Principal Investigators and other project participants to devise and implement data collection and management strategies to facilitate timely data collection in compliance with program requirements.

  • Assist Lead Analyst/Programmer in transitioning to/maintaining fully electronic data submission system between nationwide affiliates and the Research Base, ensuring HIPAA compliance.

  • Assist with web-based data collection system (REDCap).

  • API programming to interface between REDCap and SQL Server databases, other systems and our main Laboratory Inventory Management System (Freezerworks).

  • Design user-friendly web based graphical interfaces for data management team to interact with SQL server databases and implement complex queries, forms and reports for multiple projects using Microsoft Access and SQL.

Manuals/Documentation and Biospecimen tracking system (25%)

  • Write manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), documentation about the systems and processes created.

  • Biospecimen tracking system: design custom applications used by wireless barcode scanners to log in/track thousands of vacutainer tubes and create/maintain/troubleshoot Access interface for easy end-user interaction with records.

Hardware/Software and Department support (5%)

  • Keep abreast of trends as they relate to the IT field by self-study, participating in online trainings/courses, in order to enhance personal development and strengthen skills necessary for constantly evolving responsibilities.

  • Assist with and participate in the organization of the annual 2-day Research Base meeting.

  • Other duties as assigned (e.g., backup for the Desktop support specialist as needed)


  • Minimum requirements: Bachelor's Degree in computer science, informatics or a related discipline and 1-2 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (including written communication), organizational skills, attention to detail and problem-solving skills are highly essential.

  • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously, prioritize and shift priorities quickly.

  • Personal characteristics desired include flexibility, initiative, creativity and the ability and willingness to work in an evolving technological environment.

Technical skills

  • Website design, experience with CMS (Joomla) is a plus

  • Programming experience: ASP, ASP.NET, Java, C#, PHP, HTML, CSS, VBA, JavaScript, API

  • Database Administration: SQL server, Access, PHPMyAdmin, MySQL

  • MS Office (Proficiency in Access, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Operating systems: Windows 10, OS X, Linux

  • Computer hardware/software Installation, maintenance and troubleshooting skills

  • Familiarity and comfort using statistical software such as SPSS, JMP is preferred
